Prof. Dr. Suchitra Prasansuk herself a founder of the ASEAN ORL Federation more than 25 years ago reiterated her proposal fi rst given during the ASEAN ORL Congress in Bali in 2005 for the formation of the Asean Academy of Neuro-Oto-Audiology (AANOA). This was warmly received by representatives from three other Asean countries Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines.

Prof. Dr. Suchitra Prasansuk then was voted as Honorary President and Founder while Prof. Dato Lokman was voted as President, A/Prof Charlotte Chiong as General Secretary and Treasurer and Prof. Helmi Balfas from Indonesia and Prof. Dr. Wong Kein Low as Directors. It was agreed that other member ASEAN countries will be asked to join the academy in the near future. During the ASEAN ORL Congress in Vietnam a meeting was called and a call for membership was initiated.

There are now about thirty members from all over the region. AANOA also
became involved in supporting other scientifi c meetings and postgraduate courses namely the International Temporal Bone Dissection Course in Langkawi last 2007 and 2008.

The objectives of AANOA are:

  • To promote the advancement of knowledge and skill in the
    fi eld of Neuro-Oto-Audiology among the Oto-Rhino-Laryngologists
    (hereinafter referred to as “ORL”specialists)
  • To encourage the development in technical know-how in
    Neuro-Oto-Audiology among ORL specialists in the ASEAN
    countries and help in the development of the specialty in other
    countries in the region.
  • To aim to hold the ASEAN Academic Congress of Neuro-Oto-
    Audiology in relation to ASEAN ORL activities once every two
    years and/or to organize its own academic meeting every two
    years.
  • To represent the scientifi c interest in Neuro-Oto-Audiology in
    other organizations in the region
  • To engage in such activities as are appropriate to the advancement
    of Neuro-Oto-Audiology in ORL in the ASEAN countries.
